Directed by Eric Tucker (“Saint Joan”)
“lively and illuminating,” Ben Brantley, The New York Times
“When Tina Packer talks, people listen. When Tina Packer acts, people watch. When Tina Packer directs, people flock. In other words, when Tina Packer does anything it’s worth our attention,” Ed Siegel, Boston Globe
The New York premiere of Tina Packer’s WOMEN OF WILL – a groundbreaking exploration of Shakespeare’s canon – written by Ms. Packer and directed by Eric Tucker (“Saint Joan”) will begin preview performances on January 27 prior to an official press opening of February 3 and running through June 2 Off-Broadway at The Gym at Judson (243 Thompson Street), it has been announced by the show’s producer Sarah Hancock and its creator/star Tina Packer.
“I am so pleased to finally have the opportunity to perform WOMEN OF WILL in front of NYC audiences,” stated Tina Packer. “It has been a long journey – partly because I spent the last 30-plus years building Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, Massachusetts and partly because WOMEN OF WILL isn’t just one play – its six separate plays, and I – along with my wonderful collaborators Eric Tucker and Nigel Gore – have been working tirelessly to fine-tune the work before our NY debut. There is a special joy for me to be able to play the parts I missed because I was building Shakespeare & Company – parts in plays I have directed, but now can approach again from the inside not looking from the outside.”
A true tour de force performance, WOMEN OF WILL, is the masterful summation of Shakespeare & Company Founding Artistic Director Tina Packer’s 40-plus years spent investigating all things Shakespeare; it is an engrossing exploration of the Bard’s art and psyche through his female characters, and portrayed by two of Shakespeare’s greatest modern interpreters – Ms. Packer and Nigel Gore. If Shakespeare had “bonus content,” this would be it. WOMEN OF WILL explores the Bard’s characters, focusing on the “women of will,” from Beatrice in “Much Ado About Nothing” to Viola in “Twelfth Night” and everyone in between, giving a unique and exciting perspective on some of the most well-known classics in the English language.
Additionally, Ms. Packer’s WOMEN OF WILL: The Complete Journey – her fully-expanded, five part, indepth exploration of Shakespeare will be presented in marathon weekends, every other week later this season. More details on WOMEN OF WILL: The Complete Journey will be announced at a later date.
Directed by Eric Tucker, WOMEN OF WILL stars Tina Packer and Nigel Gore. The design team for WOMEN OF WILL is: Valerie Bart (Scenic & Costume Design), Les Dickert (Lighting Design), and Daniel Kluger (Sound Design).
WOMEN OF WILL was developed during a 15-year period while Tina Packer was Artistic Director at Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, Massachusetts, where both WOMEN OF WILL and WOMEN OF WILL: The Compete Journey received their world-premiere productions.
Subsequently, WOMEN OF WILL has been presented in the Boston area, by The Nora Theatre Company; the Denver area, by the Colorado Shakespeare Festival; and most recently in Prague, Czech Republic, presented by The Prague Shakespeare Festival.

Tina Packer and Nigel Gore sit in a booth in a Boulder restaurant discussing “Women of Will.” Packer’s five-play cycle about William Shakespeare’s female characters begins a run at the Colorado Shakespeare Festival on Thursday.
Their conversation illuminates the British actress-turned-American-theater dynamo’s journey from artistic director and founder of the highly regarded Shakespeare & Company, in Lenox, Mass., back to acting in a work of remarkable breadth and depth.
But the pair’s banter also gives a tantalizing hint of their onstage chemistry soon to be on display in Boulder.
“Women of Will” mixes a sort of captivating lecture with vivid, vigorous acting to produce an erudite yet entertaining artistic history.
Theater. Dance. Visual art. Opera. Classical music. Colorado has a full schedule of high-minded events to occupy your eyes, ears and soul this summer. Here, our culture critics offer up a “must” list of the season’s most promising offerings — for everyone in the family.
“Women of Will”
Colorado Shakespeare Festival, Several performances in July and August
Not only is the Colorado Shakespeare Festival staging the Bard’s “Richard III,” but it’ll pull off a coup when it presents Shakespeare & Company founder Tina Packer’s five-play cycle that considers the ways the female characters in Shakespeare’s work changed over time but also how they changed the playwright. Colorado Shakespeare Fest is the first group to stage the full cycle outside of Massachusetts.
If you are out and about seeing that film Anonymous – or if you are vaguely interested in the authorship question – go to the Shakespeare Institutes blog: 60-minutes.bloggingshakespeare.com and see the range of comments. Tina does one of them but there’s a whole range, including Janet Suzman, Harriet Waters, Greg Doran, Simon Callow, plus lots and lots of scholars. It’s pretty irrefutable, you’ll find. In any case there’s lots of interesting stuff about the plays and times.
And you can send it on to others as a short-cut when they ask you what you think about “who wrote Shakespeare?”
Theater: If you want to watch some whack-job’s crazy conspiracy theory about the true William Shakespeare, then you’ll have to go see this movie. But if you want to watch a woman who knows what she’s talking about when it comes to the Bard, then go see Tina Packer perform “Women of Will,” now playing at the Central Square Theater in Cambridge. When Packer talks about Shakespeare, you’d be wise to listen. As founding artistic director of Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, she’s an acclaimed interpreter of Shakespeare’s work. Her ambitious show “Women of Will” takes audiences through Shakespeare’s plays by concentrating on the female characters. She talks about how the Bard’s depiction of women grew and deepened over the years, and she often connects that back to what may have been going on in his personal life. Packer not only conceived “Women of Will,” but she performs in it along with her acting partner Nigel Gore. It’s interesting and insightful, and it’s playing at the Central Square Theater in Cambridge.
